We all know how the people of Pompeii died. But what about how they lived? The Lost Voices of Pompeii is a fascinating new take on a perennially popular subject by Dr Jess Venner.
Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, Dr Jess Venner brings the ancient streets to life through the eyes of those who lived, worked, loved and ultimately met their fate in Pompeii. Amongst four others from all strata of society, we meet Julia Felix, a successful female entrepreneur defying Roman convention; Petrinus, a slave grappling with his future after gaining his freedom; and politician Gaius Cuspius Pansa, who cements his power and prestige by hosting gladiatorial games at the amphitheatre.
Richly evocative and immersive, The Lost Voices of Pompeii vividly recreates the final twenty-four hours before the eruption, reminding us exactly what – and who – was lost in 79 AD.
Dr Jess Venner says: ‘After years of studying Pompeii and its people, I wanted readers to experience the city through the eyes of those who worked, loved, celebrated and struggled in its streets. The Lost Voices of Pompeii follows six people and one family who either truly existed or represent those who did, and I hope readers will feel they are walking beside them on their final day. I am thrilled to be working with Mudlark, HarperCollins to bring these hidden lives into focus and finally give a voice to the people lost in 79 AD.’
Huw Armstrong says: ‘Pompeii continues to captivate us, offering an extraordinary window into daily life. Jess reveals this city with insight, clarity, and brilliant storytelling. She’s written something very special – a vivid reconstruction of the past and a powerful reminder of the human stories that endure through history. We’re so thrilled to be working with Jess and publishing this very special book.’
The Lost Voices of Pompeii will be published by Mudlark in hardback, audiobook and ebook on 23rd April
