Happy publication day to Amber Logan on her debut novel The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn – a brilliant Japan-set, contemporary retelling of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic for adults. The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn is published by CamCat Books.
Commissioned to take photographs as part of a grant programme, thirty-six-year-old Mari arrives at Yanagi Inn, near Kyoto, just weeks after her mother’s death. Still blindsided by grief, Mari spends her days exploring the inn and its grounds, taking striking photographs and slowly uncovering the layers of secrets shrouding the old resort – including an overgrown, secret garden on a forbidden island. She sleeps fitfully, and is awakened every night by the eerie crying of a spirit which no one else in the inn seems to hear.
Despite the warnings of the inn’s staff, Mari searches the deep recesses of the old building and finds the spirit of a young girl. Soon, Mari realises that she has been brought here for another reason – to find out who this girl is, what really happened to her, and what on earth she has to do with it.
