Dr Mandy Hartley wins ASE award
Dr Mandy Hartley‘s first book, The DNA Detectives: To Catch a Thief, has won the prestigious Association for Science’s Education Book Award. According to the ASE, the award ‘seeks to find a book that goes that ‘extra mile’ and supports its vision of ‘science for all’, a book that could supplement a teacher’s understanding, that innovative hook, or something that goes beyond the traditional science curriculum.’
Dr Mandy Hartley has a PhD in Genetics and worked for 15 years in various different laboratories, using DNA to study subjects as diverse as populations of fish, inherited human diseases, criminal work and paternity and relationship testing. She now runs scientific workshops and performs stories to children with her company The Little Story Telling Co.
Mandy’s series of science-based adventure books are designed so that the reader can see how the characters in the book use DNA to solve a mystery – just like real forensic scientists. The DNA Detectives: To Catch a Thief and The DNA Detectives: The Smuggler’s Daughter are published by St James’s House.
